The hearing of millions of children and young people is constantly exposed to high noise levels without them consciously realising it. Loud music, other noises, and stress can cause long-term and irreversible damage to hearing. This may explain why the number of young people suffering from hearing disorders is constantly increasing.
Task
As damaged hearing cannot be “repaired” according to current knowledge, our task was to develop learning materials for day-care centres with a focus on prevention work.
Implementation/Results
We developed an illustrated picture book “Kim The Monkey And The Noisy Cochlea” to help young children discover their sense of hearing through play. The book provides information on how hearing works, explains the sensitivity of hearing, helps children to recognise what tinnitus and hearing loss sound like and emphasises the importance of seeing a doctor if there are hearing problems.
The book is further developed in 2024 based on the latest research findings. It will then be offered in kindergartens and educational centres throughout Berlin.
